Players report to Saints training camp
At 39 years of age, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is quietly coming off one of the best years of his entire career.
While he continues to do his best impersonation of fine wine, the rest of the team continues to age backwards heading into training camp.
Today, players reported to the Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie with a much younger squad than last year. In 2017, the Black and Gold had the 28th youngest roster in the league compared to the 19th youngest this time around.
It feels even younger when you factor in the reigning offensive and defensive rookies of the year Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore respectively.
The higher-ups tend to agree. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said, “I think that we probably feel like we have fewer holes, we had a good crop of young players come in last year and contribute and some unexpectedly. I don’t think you ever expect really heavy contributions from first-year players like the kind that we got. So I think overall we’ve got a young team, I mean we’ve got a lot of first and second-year players along with our rookies and I’m anxious to see how those guys develop and get better and so I think we feel good about that.”
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton said, “Each year is different, I think we’re a young team. That’s exciting. Obviously, when the season ends the way it does you have a bitter taste in your mouth. You’re having some success, and yet it ends in a tough fashion. But I think look, there’s a process that’s involved. You hear coaches use that word a lot, and I think it’s very important as really we begin the process of building and putting together the 2018 team.”
The Saints take on their first practice of training camp tomorrow from 8:50 to 11:40 a.m. They’ll take the field ten times total before pre-season.
