Red Cross hurricane response drill

The Mississippi American Red Cross always wants to do what they can to help the community and being prepared for when a hurricane hits can be that help.

Staff and volunteers started the hurricane response simulation this afternoon at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus. This is where they planned out the timeline of the 120 hour simulation that lay ahead of them.

Later on in the afternoon, they went to the County Farm Road Shelter where they started their overnight simulation. Those in attendance want to be prepared for when a hurricane does strike.

They want to continue the mission of the Red Cross which includes sheltering, feeding, and providing emotional support to victims of disaster. Disaster Program Manager Angie Grajeda said, “It’s important that we practice, just like in anything that you want to get right, you need to practice it so that you understand each step as it comes. We have volunteers that have been with us for years and some that are brand new so getting all of them on the same page and knowing what we need to do to be best prepared is really important.”
