USM Research Vessel

It was a three week voyage for the Point Sur– traveling from San Jose, California to Gulfport. The much anticipated arrival of USM’s new cutting edge research vessel catapults Gulfport to the top of oceanographic research for the Gulf of Mexico.
“It’s an entirely different direction that the port is going”, said Jonathan Daniels from the Port of Gulfport. “It’s a very unique partnership where we can join forces with an educational institution such as USM to allow the port to serve locationally and geographically.”
The idea is to dive into a whole new level of understanding underwater activity in the gulf, which plays a vital role in our community.
This state of the art vessel will be used to explore the Gulf of Mexico through various research projects. It will also provide a valuable new understanding of the BP oil spill of 2010.
The Point Sur could also be used for federal projects. The vessel has also been on a research project to Antarctica, so the possibilities are endless.
The 135 foot vessel will be ready for research operations on April 19th.
