Firework trash cleanup in Harrison County

Now that the July Fourth festivities are over, it’s clean up time across South Mississippi beaches. This morning, dozens of residents joined together to make that happen.

The fun of shooting fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July may be over, but the garbage and debris of those fireworks still exists.

The Owens family joined forces with the Coastal Cleanup Organization and volunteers from Mississippi State to spend their morning cleaning up Biloxi beaches, trying to get rid of the left over junk.  Mississippi State Assistant Extension Professor Beth Baker said, “We want to get out here as soon as we can and get it out of the water so it doesn’t impact the water quality. It can do a little damage.”

Not only does large amount of trash affect the environment, it also affects beachgoers which is why some decided to get out and help clean up.  “We really enjoy the beach. Clean the beach up.”

This is not the first time Chicago Natives Ray and Kathy Smith grabbed their trash bags and taken to the sand to clean up after the Fourth. “We enjoyed it so much last year. We are impressed.”
