Urban Renewal Plan voted on in Gulfport
The Urban Renewal Plan for three areas of Gulfport will go forward after a City Council vote this afternoon.
The three areas that are included in the plan are downtown, the Turkey Creek area, and 19th and 20th Street. The downtown and 19th and 20th Street areas passed with a 7-0 vote, but the Turkey Creek area passed with a 6-1 vote with Councilwoman Ella Holmes-Hines voting against the plan.
Councilwoman Holmes-Hines, along with residents who live in the Turkey Creek area, voiced their concerns over development in the area. “We’re gonna take the next step. We will protect our homes. We will protect our community and it’s been one of those things that the citizens have already filed before. This is gonna be something we do again. That we will file in the courts that say no we are not gonna let you flood our neighborhoods.”
Those for the plan tell News 25 they think the plan will not only introduce developments in the area, but also help come up with a solution to fix the flooding in the Turkey Creek area.
