Long Beach police to deploy Narcan

In an effort to save lives, Long Beach police and Gulf Coast HIDTA have partnered to purchase Naloxone which officers and staff are being trained to administer.

Also known as Narcan, this emergency substance counteracts the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose. Narcan is a life-saving tool for law enforcement. It simply blocks the opioid from receptors in the brain.

The only side effects are those associated with opioid withdrawal if the overdose is opioid related. Narcan can be administered as nasal spray rather than the use of a syringe.

Long Beach police officers will officially roll out the new equipment tomorrow.
