Biloxi Shuckers midseason review

If there’s any team that can truly appreciate the Southern League All-Star break, it’s the Biloxi Shuckers. On Friday, they clinched the South Division first half title and their first return trip to the playoffs since 2015.

The Shuckers had the rest of the league in chase mode from the opening week where they ripped off eight consecutive wins from April 6th to the 15th. They also had a nine-game home winning streak spanning from April to May.

So, all the Shuckers had to do was hang on and that’s exactly why they did by going 16-12 in one-run ball games. The end result was a three-game lead over the Mobile Bay Bears with an overall record of 41-29. Biloxi Shuckers Ambassador Barry Lyons said, “Getting off to an early, good start certainly is very important to any team’s success. And certainly the Biloxi Shuckers did that and played very well early and had all cylinders clicking from Day 1, but the team has responded to the few challenges that it had periodically throughout the first half. And actually it got down to a game and-a-half a couple of weeks ago, but yet they were able to manage to hold it together and to come up with some big wins on the road and ended up with a great first half.”

Lyons says he hopes the team’s first half success parlays into more fans jumping on board in the second half.
