2018-2019 Shrimp season begins today

At 6 a.m. this morning, the shrimp season kicked off in state territorial waters for commercial and residential fisherman.

News 25’s Caroline Eaker spoke to some local shrimpers who have made shrimping into a family business.

Hundreds of shrimp boats decorated the Mississippi Sound Wednesday morning for the opening day of shrimp season and for shrimpers like Ricky Ross, casting his nets into the Mississippi waters has become a family affair. “It’s just in my blood, pretty well my whole life.”

Members of the Ross family have been catching shrimp in Mississippi for generations and for Derick Ross, it’s the only job he has ever known. “I love fishing. This is what we do.”

A shrimping tradition that Derick is already passing down to his son, Ryan, who will join them on the boat this season which, according to the shrimpers, is already looking up from last year.

Recreational and commercial shrimp season north of the Intracoastal Waterway will close at midnight on December 31st, 2018. In areas south of the waterway and west of the Gulfport Ship Channel, shrimp season will close at midnight on April 30th, 2019.
