Speckled trout commercial season will not reopen
Officials with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Tuesday the commercial season for speckled trout will not reopen Friday, June 1st.
There are two commercial seasons for speckled trout. The first runs from February 1st through May 31st. The second runs from June 1st through October 31st and the limit in each season is 25,000 pounds.
MDMR Executive Director Joe Spraggins tells News 25 the annual quota of 50,000 pounds has already been met due to under-reporting. “After we re-evaluated the trip tickets and then went back and found some under-reported tickets that had not been reported we now realize that we have reached a limit for the second season so we cannot open the season because of that. That is our decision right now. It could be something that we could look at in the future and if we could find more information.”
The office of Marine Patrol is investigating the under-reporting and the season is closed until further notice.
