Howard Avenue Project gets underway
Today, Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich put on a hard hat and planted a jackhammer into Howard Avenue.
This marked the groundbreaking on the long awaited Howard Avenue Project. In 180 days Howard Avenue will be transformed into a two-lane street with convenient parking and sidewalks. The section of Howard Avenue was once the heart of downtown Biloxi, lined with clothing stores, movie theaters and bars.
The new design removes all surfacing between Reynoir and Lameuse and replaces it with concrete sidewalks and brick roadways. Cecilia Dobbs-Walton with Biloxi Public Affairs said, “This is something that Mayor Gilich has been looking forward to. He believes that this is a linchpin in the downtown revitalization project. Work is to begin and the road may be closed as early as Tuesday, that is Howard Avenue between Reynoir and Lameuse Street, the project is a $1.93 million project.”
For the businesses located on Howard Avenue, there are public parking lots north and south of Howard Avenue where customers can park to still access the business during construction.
