Loaded Gun Found In Backpack, No Charges Yet
A five year old brought a loaded gun to school Tuesday in Ocean Springs.
As of now there are no charges against the guardian of the child who’s back-pack had a loaded hand-gun inside it.
Authorities were called to Oak Park Elementary School after a teacher discovered the loaded gun during a “Routine Safety Check.”
According to ocean springs police the five-year-old student’s guardian put the gun into the backpack over the weekend…and while they were running errands forgot about the weapon.
A mother who works at the business across the street from the elementary school tells News 25 parents should always pay attention to what their child brings to class.
“It’s very scary that I’m so close to the school and I would hate for something to happen over there. It’s very sad to me that a child is able to do something like that like bring a gun in their backpack, I think parents need to be more into parenting and make sure they know what’s going to school and what’s not.”

The Ocean Springs school district sent out a phone message, alerting parents.
Ocean springs school superintendent Bonita Coleman tells News 25 the incident should be a lesson of how important it is for gun-owners to secure their fire-arms.
The case will go before a Jackson County Grand Jury.
