Bay St. Louis City Council’s vote sparking controversy

Racism allegations in Bay St. Louis after a letter targeting a city alderman and the city council’s vote in favor of replacing the only African American member on the school board.
Last night’s vote to replace incumbent Joan Thomas on the Bay-Waveland School Board is being called a set back by some who have spoken out, like Alderman Rev. Jeffrey Reed. The mayor and council members voted to replace Thomas with educator Anne Lathrop. Bay St. Louis Mayor Mike Favre tells News 25 the decision has nothing to do with Thomas’ race or ethnic background.
Alderman Reed says replacing Thomas doesn’t reflect diversity community leaders should be portraying. “You have students, you have children, that are coming up and when they look at the school board they don’t see no representation. So, who are they to be like? Who are they to compare themselves with?”
The decision at city hall comes after Rev. Jeffrey Reed, who is right now the only African American council member, received a racial charged letter full of slurs and hate speech.
More details about the letter and hear from Mayor Favre at 9 p.m. on FOX and 10 p.m. on NBC.
