Railroad safety initiative

Tomorrow marks one year since four people were killed in a train versus bus accident in Biloxi.
This year alone, Biloxi has had eight people involved in train fatalities which has urged Biloxi city leaders to move forward with a plan to make for safer railroads in the city. The city plans to close six railroad crossings as soon as possible.
Today, the city council will look into a contract with Neel-Schaffer to create an engineering design which will connect the access road from Dorries Street to Crawford Street. Cecilia Dobbs Walton with Biloxi Public Affairs said, “Mayor Gilich has said for many years that there is too many crossings in a small area so this is just a way to make the area safer to close the crossings. We have had a number of accidents as many are aware of trains colliding with vehicles and this will help by reducing the crossings of vehicles going past again, doing the side road, they will be going along the railroad tracks and not across the railroad tracks.”
City officials tell News 25 they except to start this safety initiative and project in 2019.
