Reading gate educational meeting in Gulfport

Education is a hot topic in the state of Mississippi. In light of recent budget cuts for MAEP that discussion is sure to continue.
Members of the Mississippi Department of Education are doing their part to help parents better understand portions of the educational legislation in our state and to put resources in their hands.
A meeting hosted in Gulfport for that very purpose created an opportunity for parents to learn more about the literacy bench marks in our state set by the Literacy Based Promotion Act. First grader Gavin Rose said, “It puts pictures in your mind and it’s really fun when you read.”
Carita Vidrine with the Mississippi Department of Education said, “That’s what we’re encouraging as part of this is partnering with schools. Too often parents feel inhibited of going to schools and partnering, being informed about what’s going on and how they can help their child and that’s what we want them to do.”
If you missed that meeting, but are interested in learning more there will be another one at the Woodall Center in Hattiesburg on February 28th starting at 6 p.m.
