Waveland Public Library sets up story walk to create opportunities for literacy
Creating a space for children and families to read while enjoying the outdoors, a story walk is now available to the community.
In the green space between the Waveland Public Library and Ground Zero Hurricane Museum on Coleman Avenue, story book pages line the sidewalk.
The 20-page children’s book ‘Not Norman: A Goldfish Story” will be available for the month of February. Next month, a new book will replace it.
The Mississippi Library Commission supplied the storyboards for all to enjoy. Waveland Public Library Branch Manager Angela Christoffer said, “It’s important for all children, for everybody, to read and we want you to come out. We offer a lot of different activities, outside activities. We have outdoor games. It’s not just about books and DVDs anymore.”
Hancock County Library Executive Director John Brdecka said, “Parents, grandparents, kids, home school, teachers, things of that nature, where they want to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful scenery, and enjoy a book while walking at the same time.”
According to staff at the library, the community reaction has been overwhelming. Many families have come to participate in the story walk.
