Local students deliver Valentine’s Day gifts to seniors at Summerfield Senior Living
Residents at the Summerfield Senior Living of Gulfport received lots of love on this Valentine’s Day thanks to health-science students at the Harrison County Career and Technical Center.
Students stuffed around 80 hand made bags on Friday and delivered them to seniors today. Each goody bag was filled with blankets, puzzles, and books.
One of the students reached out to Dollar General, who was kind enough to donate crossword puzzle books.
The students added their own personal touches to each bag. Health-Science Teacher Kaitlyn Derouen said, “We call this ‘Adopt a Grandparent for Valentine’s Day’ and Valentine’s Day really isn’t a huge thing that you think about the elderly for. So, we wanted to make them feel special and to let them know that we weren’t going to forget about them and we wanted them to have something special from us.”
Health-science student Anna Grace Nobles said, “A lot of them may not have family or whatever. So, we just wanted to come and give them something and show them that they are loved and that we care for them. I think it’s important for us young people to get out in the community and do stuff like that.”
After passing out the goody bags, students enjoyed socializing and playing word games with the seniors.
