Youth baseball camp helps local kids learn the fundamentals

More than a hundred kids gathered at the Gulfport Sportsplex this weekend to learn the basics of baseball from Major League stars Jonathan Holder, Fred Lewis, and Matthew Lawton.

The camp was for kids ages five through 12 to get a chance to learn the fundamentals of baseball such as throwing, catching, and hitting.

The camp was broken down into four stations: defense, batting, pitching, and speed and agility.

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Jonathan Holder, a Gulfport High and Mississippi State alum, tells News 25 why it is so important to learn the fundamentals. “It’s important to get a good grasp of the game. Baseball is not an easy sport to learn. It’s really enjoyable when you really get to know the fundamentals of the game and when you get to play.”

Camp Organizer Fred Lewis says he’s looking to make this free baseball camp an annual event.
