Southern Miss Baseball Ready to Swing for the Fences in 2017
Something that worked really well for the Southern Miss baseball team last year was the home run. The Golden Eagles were 12th in the nation in that department and they appear ready for an encore in 2017.
Although that might seem hard to believe on paper, with USM having lost 36 of its 67 homers to either graduation or the draft, but what the Black and Gold have coming back are two of their top three power hitters from a year ago in Dylan Burdeaux and Taylor Braley. The former led the team with 11 long balls in 2016, followed by the latter with ten.
However, Braley did all that in less than half a season after tearing his left meniscus in early April. Safe to say he’ll be back in the heart of the lineup, ready to swing for the fences once again. “Oh absolutely, I mean we have inter-squads and it is everybody hitting on each team is hard to pitch to. There’s no one guy you can pitch around to get to the next guy and get an easy out. You’ve got to really focus in and pitch to every single person,” said Braley.
Burdeaux said, “We have four guys that are going to be behind Braley that can all cover him up. You don’t want to get to that next guy just as much as you don’t want to pitch to Braley, so it’s going to be fun to see what these guys can do.”
USM’s 67 home runs were also tops in Conference USA. Marshall was next with 60.
