Pennies for Petal Campaign

A penny saved is a penny earned, but students in the Harrison County School District have learned that a penny given multiplies and is an investment for the greater good. For the past two weeks, Harrison County students have been working with Papa John’s to help raise donations for the Pennies for Petal campaign, a district-wide drive to collect donations and funds to help out Petal residents and students who are recovering from the tornado that struck January 21st and leveled some of Petal’s schools.
Petal schools Superintendent Dr. Matt Dillon was on hand to accept a check for more than $716, along with gift cards and other donations totaling nearly $25,000 in all to help out the Petal School District, an endeavor Dr. Dillon praises as a gift and lesson that goes beyond textbook learning. “These life lessons we’re teaching our children right now about loving your neighbor and being there for them and helping people in need is something I think is monumental and I think something that’s going to help them in life after high school when they go into the real world.”
After the presentation, school leaders, faculty, and staff were treated to pizza from Papa John’s. This donation comes on the heels of a donation last week by students at West Harrison High School. On Friday they delivered two busloads of donations for the Petal and Hattiesburg tornado victims.
