Gov. Bryant Declares Tornado Preparedness Week

Governor Phil Bryant has declared this week Tornado Preparedness Week. Sound advice as we get closer to peak tornado season in Mississippi, which has one of the highest occurrences of violent and long-track tornadoes in the country.

Much destruction was caused from tornadoes which occurred during the deadly outbreak last April, where 14 Mississippians lost their lives. The National Weather Service will be issuing a statewide test warning on Wednesday, February 11th at schools, businesses, and N.O.A.A. weather radios. Emergency officials say these radios and apps are the best way to stay informed.

Donald Langham, Emergency Management Coordinator, says, "The best thing to do is just to be aware of your surroundings. If you do get a weather alert through your phone or news channels to take cover, and not try to ride it out unless you’re in a safe place."

Langham says while strong tornadoes on the Coast are rare, it’s better to be prepared for the worst during the spring storm season.
