Bill To Raise Education Requirements
Mississippi senators are looking to raise the bar for school superintendents but there’s some hesitation for doing the same for school board members.
The Senate approved a bill that would heighten requirements for superintendents, but recommitted a measure that would have raised education qualifications for public school board members.
The will would require school board members to have completed 60 hours of college coursework or hold a community college degree.
Bill author Senator Kevin Blackwell says nationally 75 percent of school board members hold at least a bachelor’s degree and argues Mississippi should raise the bar.
The Senate Thursday voted to recommit the bill or send it back to committee.
