New STEM workforce program brings Gen Z to the Sea
The Center for Science and Mathematics Education and the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi is bringing in a new STEM workforce program called GenSea.
The program was funded last fall and became a full time program this January.
Professionals in GenSea are spreading the message about the array of well-paying STEM careers in the Gulf South region, along with a pair of new USM Ocean Engineering and Hydrography programs that prepare students to walk right into excellent careers after graduation.
The program provides interactive field trips for high school students from all over the state, free of charge, to tour USM’s training and research facilities and engage in hands-on projects.
If students are unable to travel, the GenSea teams will visit classes across the region to share information and activities, either virtually or in person. Director of Communications and Curriculum Tara Skelton said, said, “Hydrography, we’re the only one in the country who offer that. Ocean engineering, we’re one of 10 universities who offer that, and the students who come out of those programs, it’s 100% employment. They have companies seeking them.”
Grad Research Assistant Patrick Kirby said, “We really want them to leave with a sense of ‘I do not have to leave the gulf coast to get a good job.'”
