National Council of Negro Women giving youth opportunity to share their COVID story
The Mississippi Council of the National Council of Negro Women is providing a platform during Black History Month to allow youth to express COVID’s impact on their life.
In commemoration of the anniversary of its Good Health Wins initiative, the council will host a Mississippi statewide COVID creative expressions contest that will allow youth to be heard.
Students can use a variety of categories such as essays, poems, art, song, dance, and others to express how COVID has impacted their lives, the lives of their friends and families, and their schools.
Any Mississippi student grade K through 12 can submit an entry. Cash prizes will be given out to the 1st through 3rd place finishers of each grade level. Katherine Egland with the Mississippi Council said, “We have been hearing a lot about COVID from adults. We’ve been hearing about the political side of COVID, but we haven’t heard much of what our children are feeling. We don’t know how our children are adjusting to COVID, and that’s very important.”
Submissions can be sent to eeechomovement@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions will be February 19th and student participants will be recognized during an NCNW virtual event on February 27th.
