E-Mail Scam Targets Tax Professionals
The IRS is warning tax professionals of an ongoing e-mail scam from cybercriminals posing as clients soliciting their services.
This new scheme is targeting accounting firms and tax preparation firms nationwide and it comes in two stages. An e-mail asking for tax filing services and a second containing an embedded web address or PDF attachment. The tax professional may think they are downloading a client’s tax information when in reality the cybercriminals are collecting passwords and other information.
The IRS urges tax professionals to never respond or click a link in an unsolicited e-mail or PDF attachment from an unknown sender.
