Cheerleading Recognized as a Sport

Here’s something for millions of athletes across the world to cheer about. This afternoon, the International Olympic Committee voted to recognize cheerleading as an official sport.
The IOC also granted $25,000 in annual funding to the International Cheer Union with the opportunity to apply for other grants. The provisional recognition will last for three years during which the sport can apply to be included in the Olympics.
Athletes at Cheer Zone Athletics in Saucier tell News 25 they are excited to see the sport receive the recognition it deserved for years. Cheer Zone Owner Shiela Perry said, “It kind of really opens the flood gates for being recognized as a sport, more governed, more safety issues and protocols. I really think it’s a great step for the industry of cheerleading.”
Skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing are some of the sports joining the Olympics at the 2020 games.
