Senator Wicker on Eureka Plan Becoming Law
U.S. Senator Roger Wicker is pleased to see a proposal to create prize based competitions to encourage more collaboration in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease become law.
Wicker had a hand in creating the plan. He says in addition to the research money that is directed through the National Institute of Health, the Eureka prizes will offer an opportunity for people to compete for monetary prizes if they reach certain milestones like a way to postpone the onset or even a cure for Alzheimer’s.
“I was heartened to see that there was so much open mindedness in the research community to adding prize competition, not as a replacement for what we’re doing, but over and above what we’re doing. If we can get someone to come through with a discovery there, it would be worth billions and billions to the American people. You wouldn’t pay the prize until you got the results,” said Senator Wicker.
Wicker was also successful in adding several healthcare proposals to the 21st Century Cures Act, which are also now law.
