American Legion Post 119 Gets New Home This Weekend

The members of American Legion Post 119 haven’t had a home of their own since Hurricane Katrina, but that all changes Saturday. The grand opening of Post 119’s new home will be a busy day for members.

After a scholarship contest between two local high school students who will be discussing the Constitution, the ribbon cutting ceremony with the Mayor himself will begin at 4 p.m. Members finally have a home base to relax at, and as more and more members return, they can also once again begin their community service projects. Ray Weaver, Commander of Post 119 in Gulfport, says, "We had over 1,200 members. We were the largest post in Mississippi. Then, after Katrina and we didn’t have a home, people started leaving and going to other posts."

Gary Stumpf, 3rd Vice Commander of Post 119, says, "We have a place to work out of that we can call home, that we can call our own. It’s very exciting, we’re all jazzed about this."

The new post is on Ashley Drive in Gulfport right off of Highway 49, and all are welcome to attend the grand opening.
