Victim identified in Pascagoula deadly shooting
The Pascagoula Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another behind bars.
Last night at about 11 p.m., Pascagoula police received a 911 call saying that someone was shooting at their vehicle on Jerry St. Pe’ Highway. Moments later the shooter made his way to Highway 90 and Victor Street where he shot 61-year-old Leland Sumrall from Irvington, Alabama. Sumrall was transported to Singing River Hospital, but was pronounced dead 40 minutes later.
The suspect, Luis Joel Soto Jr. of Gautier, is being charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of murder. Captain Doug Adams said, “There is no relationship between the two men, none whatsoever, Mr. Leland was riding his motorcycle down the road, Mr. Soto comes up behind him, turns into what appeared to be a road rage incident and starts firing at Mr. Leland and hits him four times.”
This afternoon, Pascagoula Municipal Judge Michael Fondren set Luis Soto Jr.’s bond at one million dollars per count. Soto is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center in Pascagoula.
