Taking on the challenge at North Bay Elementary
Students at North Bay Elementary School in Biloxi are taking home a lesson that goes beyond traditional textbooks. They’ve been working on the Great Kindness Challenge all week long.
News 25’s Toni Miles gives us an inside look as the week wraps with a life-long lesson.
They’ve decked the halls with signs of kindness and served up a sweet treat for the cafeteria staff. Cafeteria Manager Angelika Dickey said, “They totally surprised us and made us cry today. They are awesome kids.”
While lunch wasn’t even being served yet, there was already a long line of gratitude on the cafeteria walls. In the classroom, teachers made a list and were checking it twice to see which students would get a prize for being real nice. Student Natalie Carpenter said, “We’ve been dressing up through the week. We have a checklist we’ve got to go through. It has a lot of kindness things on it. You’ve got to check it off and we’ve basically been doing that all week.”
Fourth grader Mason Wells wants to be a doctor or dentist when he grows up. He’s learned that a merry heart and an act of kindness can go a long way. “All the things I’ve seen is little things can turn into big things, like helping people pick up their books if they fell, their pencils, anything.”
All week long, students at North Bay Elementary School have been put to the test as they take on the Great Kindness Challenge. North Bay Elementary Principal Dr. Laurie Pitre said, “We believe being a good person is just as important as being a smart person. One of our mottos is becoming our best in our minds and our hearts and teaching our kids how to deal with adversity. How to deal when someone is mean to you or someone is unkind, that it’s always better to respond with kindness and in love then to respond another way.”
So did they pass? “What did you learn this week at North Bay?” “Choose kindness!” You bet they did with flying colors shining through even on a cloudy day.
