Buddy Walk continues with drive-thru parade
The Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society celebrated its 21st Buddy Walk at the Gulfport Sportsplex this weekend, continuing its COVID-friendly drive-thru parade from last year.
With more than a hundred cars participating, the Buddy Walk celebrates Down Syndrome Awareness Month by promoting inclusiveness and camaraderie.
The event is the organization’s largest fundraiser all year, with proceeds going to scholarship opportunities.
The parade began at 1 p.m. and teams decked out their rides for a cruise through the sportsplex, showing off their loved ones with Down Syndrome to droves of cheering spectators. Buddy Walk Chair Amy Williams said, “So Gulf Coast Down Syndrome, it’s just such an amazing event. It’s our biggest fundraiser, public awareness event. And so, all of our friends and family get together and come out in support of each of our loved ones with Down Syndrome, and it’s just a wonderful day to celebrate.”
WXXV News 25 was a sponsor of this year’s event.
