Gulfport Honors Allman Brothers Drummer, Jaimoe Johanson
Jaimoe Johanson, the Allman Brothers Band drummer, visited the city he was raised in Tuesday afternoon to be honored by the Mississippi Blues Trail for his musical legacy. The Allman Brothers Band formed in 1969, playing southern rock, blues, jazz, and country music. During the Allman Brothers’ run, the band was awarded several gold and platinum albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Tuesday, family, friends, and fans gathered to remember the reign of the Allman Brothers.
Johanson says, "I’m speechless. I’m the happiest person in the world. I have nothing to say except we appreciate all these people. I can’t believe all these people are out here. It feels great. If I knew it was this great, I would have come back a long time ago."
A marker featuring Johanson’s contribution to the blues and jazz genres was placed on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Gulfport.
