Post 119 Veterans Day Ceremony

“Freedom is not free, our country had to be fought for,” this is what a 91-year-old Gulfport veteran says to keep in mind as America celebrates Veterans Day today.
The City of Gulfport, Mayor Billy Hewes, and American Legion Post 119 put on a ceremony honoring vets in downtown Gulfport this morning. The Veterans Day ceremony opened with a musical presentation from the Harrison Central High School band then the crowd sang the national anthem.
There was a blessing of the troops and a speech from guest speaker General Benjamin Spraggins. Among the crowd, a veteran who will be 92 in January. He says there are not too many vets left who have been through what he has. Veteran Jim Highton said, “Losing about 400 a day and God knows why I’m still here. I’m so lucky and grateful and I’m so proud to be a veteran of this wonderful country and what a nice day this is to be here. I’m honored to be here today.”
After the ceremony, the American Legion invited the crowd to have a free catfish dinner at Post 119.
