Post-Katrina eyesore in Waveland to be demolished
An old Waveland eyesore is coming down in Hancock County, but not everyone is happy about it.
The old animal feed store has been sitting vacant on Highway 90 since Hurricane Katrina. Workers began demoing the building today after city alderman voted in favor of tearing the old store down. Before the decision was made, a building inspector deemed it unsafe.
A Waveland resident tells News 25 it disappoints him to see a building that survived Hurricane Katrina come down. He says the old store is a historic structure and the city should have tried harder to restore it.
This is what Mayor Mike Smith had to say. “I have received more complaints on Days Frontier, the old Days Frontier than any other building in the city, and when you’re coming into the city, of course, the highway corridor is our main business district. We want that to look inviting and there’s some other properties we have to deal with too. That is a major one on our list.”
There’s still a chance part of the building may be saved. A public hearing to address the matter will be held at Waveland City Hall January 17th.
