Bay High Senior with Down Syndrome Scores Two Touchdowns
Over the weekend, another running back scored his first touchdown of the season, actually his first two touchdowns.
Clarence Kennedy, an 18-year-old senior at Bay High with Down syndrome, suited up for a different team on Saturday, proving to be a dream come true for the ever-smiling playmaker.
After not seeing the field in Bay High’s senior night against Moss Point in last week’s regular season finale, Diamondhead Spartans Head Coach Ricky Underwood concocted a plan and Kennedy’s mother, Temple Lyons, was on board.
Her son was going to play, but not for Underwood’s team. Playing the entire game for Will Seymour and the Bay Tigers youth team, Kennedy touched the ball three times, scoring touchdowns of 50 yards and 10 yards.
It was a larger than life moment for a kid with a larger than life smile that can teach everyone a thing or two about the love of the game. “Like I said, just seeing his smile and knowing that that’s something he’s always wanted to do and couldn’t do and for him to go from one week from crying to smiling, that was the best thing for me,” said Underwood.
“It’s most uplifting for me and his baby brother because we can’t let the can’t get in our way because he’s proving that what they say he can’t do, he’s going to try to go out and do,” said Lyons.
Kennedy was able to take the field for one play during his junior year during a varsity game.
