Deaf Grassroots Movement in Gulfport
Today members of the Deaf Grassroots Movement gathered outside of Gulfport City Hall to raise awareness and promote equal opportunities for members of the deaf community.
This awareness campaign is part of a nationwide movement to earn equality. The group stood together today demanding improved access to jobs and education for deaf individuals while also creating a gateway to improve communication between the local deaf community and city leaders.
Manual Rojas with the Deaf Grassroots Movement said, “Deaf Grassroots Movement, it’s about equal rights for a job or for education in schools for children, also trying to be accommodating with and stick together with the deaf people in the area.”
The City of Gulfport was excited to be a part of the awareness campaign. Gulfport is the only city on the Mississippi Gulf Coast with sign language interpreters present at city council meetings.
Rojas tells News 25 the group will travel to Jackson to raise awareness for all deaf individuals living in our state.
