Raw Sewage Spill

Industrial Seaway and Bernard Bayou remain under a water advisory after a big raw sewage spill in Gulfport.

As news 25’s Gina Tomlinson reports, city crews have managed to contain the spill, but it’s still causing some of the residents to raise a stink about it.

Sandy likes to go on walks outside.
But Sandy’s owner Adrian Loomis plans to keep her indoors for now. Since 500,000 gallons of sewage leaked into water-ways right by their Gulfport home.

“Is it going to kill your animals if they come outside…There’s a lot that can happen to you when you mess with feces.”
– Adrian Loomis

A water advisory is in effect for the industrial seaway and Bernard Bayou after a pipe burst causing the half a million gallons of raw sewage to spill by Glascock Drive in Gulfport.

Public works crews were able to contain Monday’s spill by Wednesday morning.

“The fact that it was a 24 inch force main coming off of a big lift station off seaway island that was our problem, trying to get the flow down.”

But there’s still work to be done…

“It smells literally like feces, like you’re living in a sewage pool.”
– Adrian Loomis

Missy Rodriguez has lived on these waters all her life.

“That waterway is so beneficial who spend time outside who don’t go out front”
– Missy Rodriguez

“Some of the sewage flowed into drains and ditches leading into Bernard Bayou a waterway the Rodriguez family says they love to enjoy.”
– Gina Tomlinson

“Very active, the children do wake boarding. We like to ride our wave runners through; we just enjoy the beauty and the nature of the animals.”
– Missy Rodriguez

Gulfport’s public works director say city crews continue to work round the clock … Now cleaning up the run off….

“The crew that was onsite at five o’clock was still there at 1 o’ clock this morning they had not gone home yet.”
– Wayne Miller

Authorities will continue to test the water and will lift the water advisory when it’s safe
