Gulfport reclaims district crown
The Gulfport football team is one win away from having run the gauntlet in Region 4 Class 6A after claiming the district title for the first time since 2015 with a senior night win over Ocean Springs on Friday.
After a one-year rental, the Admirals have taken back the crown from D’Iberville, securing a playoff one-seed in the process. What lies ahead is the regular season finale at Biloxi, who is in desperate need of a win to punch its post-season ticket.
But no matter the outcome, the Admirals have restored power as top dog behind a defense that’s allowing just nine points per game since the start of league play. Gulfport linebacker Karlos Dillard said, “Everybody is a brotherhood, everybody is banded together. We love each other. You mess with one, you’ve got to mess with all of us. And we come with the mindset that we want to be the best in the state, not just the Coast. Cause the state is way bigger than just the Coast, so we want to be the best in the state. So we know what we’ve got to do, we’ve got to create turnovers, we’ve got to stop them, three-and-outs, get off the field and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. Every time we complete something like that or accomplish something like that, it gives us more confidence that we can finally do what we want to do.”
Gulfport will hit the road for a date with rival Big Red at 7 p.m. on Friday over in Biloxi.
