Today’s Weather:

After the long Labor Day weekend, we’re heading back to work with a rather ‘standard’ summer-like day for south Mississippi. But, changes are coming and they’ll be here later today.

It starts with a little, weak back-door cold front that is working its way through the Mississippi coastal counties throughout the day today. Unlike zonal flow frontal systems that bring rain and storms, this little guy is working its way through from east to west and will bring a noticeable change in humidity. Watch through the day as the dew point will gradually fall from the mid-70s we have this morning down into the mid-60s by tomorrow.

Now, while that doesn’t seem like very much, it will decrease our relative humidity numbers from the near 100-percent this morning to in the 70% tomorrow morning. That’s much drier.

Of course, it’s not going to last long … dew points will return to higher values late this week, prelude to rain and thunderstorm chances this weekend.

The Tropics:

Not much happening this morning. Post-Tropical Storm Hermine is off the New England coast with 65 mph winds. A weak tropical wave is in the mid-Caribbean Sea. And there’s a tropical wave off the coast of Africa, which warrants watching for development later this week.

Hurricane Newton:

We don’t often talk about Pacific hurricanes, but Newton, now hitting Baja California, could bring effects to Arizona and New Mexico later this week along the lines of a monsoon, which they have no trouble getting this time of year anyway.

Falcon 9 Rocket Explodes – Launch Companies Could Feel the Effects

(space.com)

The apparent explosion of a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle during a static fire test Sept. 1 has implications for both commercial and government customers, including putting into jeopardy the sale of one satellite operator.

The explosion took place during preparations for a static fire test, part of SpaceX’s standard pre-launch preparations for Falcon 9 flights at Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The test was in advance of a Sept. 3 launch of the Amos-6 communications satellite for Israeli satellite operator Spacecom.
