47th Hurricane Camille Remembrance
While Louisiana currently battles flood damage, today the Mississippi Gulf Coast remembers a natural disaster we experienced 47 years ago.
Hurricane Camille rocked South Mississippi back in 1969. One hundred and forty three people on the Gulf Coast were killed including three unidentified women.
Today, wreaths and tombstones honor those victims at the Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport. Community members gathered at the site to remember Hope, Faith and Charity.
Two survivors of the tragic storm attended and recount the horrible storm. Hurricane Camille survivor Celia Barrett said, “We thought water was lapping into the house, so we all grabbed towels and shoved them under the doors and we spent most of the night tripping over those towels. It really struck home when I was reading hers because I’m in that age range and all the others were younger and it’s just sad. We know so much more now, thank goodness.”
The category five storm packed winds estimated at 200 miles per hour.
