Extreme flooding in Moss Point neighborhood

In Jackson County, residents had to evacuate their homes as streets became flooded after heavy rains from Hurricane Ida.

Jackson County Fire and Rescue and Escatawpa Fire Department are taking evacuation calls. Over a dozen homes have been evacuated and at least two rescues required medical assistance.

If you are in Moss Point and are looking for a safe place to evacuate, Pelican Landing is open to the public and rescue teams are transporting evacuees to Pelican Landing as a safe space. Moss Point Ward 2 Alderman Darius Wilson said, “Picking up mostly the elderly that have been trapped in their homes that needed assistance, just staying in communication with the people in our area through family members, through text messages, through social media. That’s how we’ve been alerted to where those positions are. In addition to the Moss Point Fire Department, we want to thank our partners in Jackson County with their fire, search and rescue, they’ve been a tremendous help.”

Alderman Wilson is also advising residents to stay bunkered down, stay off the streets, and only travel if absolutely necessary as more rains could continue to flood low lying areas.
