Pascagoula senior running back rewrites Pascagoula history books
Only two running backs in the history of Pascagoula High School football have rushed for more than 300 yards in a single game. Treg Thomas did it back in 1993, going for a program record 331 yards. Trey Abney topped that on Friday against Gautier in a performance his coach is calling the best he’s ever seen by any player in person.
There’s been plenty of high praise to go around during the Panthers’ bye week for the man with a couple new nicknames.
“They can’t stop you, can they?” No, they can’t and they didn’t. “After that first touch, that first carry, I just knew. It was something in my body, I was like yeah, it is fixing to be my night.”
Thirty carries, 355 yards, and four touchdowns later, Trey Abney had rewritten the history books at Pascagoula. “I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say. It feels good, great.”
(“Three hundred and fifty five yards, this might go without saying, but was that the best game you’ve ever seen him play?”) “Best game I’ve seen anyone play in person.”
The last time a Pascagoula player hit the century mark on the ground more than three times over, Abney wasn’t even born. That is until he was reborn on Friday as a category 5. “What’s up record breaker (“That’s your new nickname?”) “It’s Hurricane Abney now.”
The 5’8 senior, formerly from Moss Point, says he’s projected to make landfall September 22nd for the start of region play, but he’s already begun wreaking havoc on the rest of the Gulf South. “It’s the mind, it’s my mind frame. It’s our mind frame, not just mine. There’s no I in Team.”
Pascagoula Right Tackle Ja’Lyric Molton said,”I knew since last year when he made spectacular plays that Trey, his vision was amazing. His cuts are amazing and I knew that he was going to have a good game from the first play.”
Head Coach Lewis Sims said, “You know what, that was maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity to see that kind of performance, but we hope we can repeat that a couple times throughout the year and it all goes back to taking care of the little things, protecting the football, getting a hat on a hat and being tough.”
That’s gonna be the motto for the Panthers as they go through the rest of 2017 as one of the smallest schools back in the 6A ranks. “Yeah, we like it. We’re the underdogs. It’s all good. They’re going to know us in November.”
“We like when people look down on us, cause when we beat them, they don’t know what to do.”
“We go from 5A to 6A, we’re 14 students from being the smallest school in 6A and if that doesn’t put a little chip on your shoulder, nothing else will.”
Until Abney opens his mouth and then it’s a whole bag of chips. “Listen, the way we’re thinking right now, this year is our year. We’re not worried about last year. We’re not worried about the past few games. It was just obstacles in the road. We all had to get over problems in our life, but this year is our year.”
Pascagoula comes out of its bye week with a fifth consecutive road game at Harrison Central to kick off district play. Coach Sims says War Memorial Stadium will be ready to go for the September 29th home game versus Gulfport.
Abney transferred to Pascagoula before the start of the 2016 season.
