Heroic delivery man attempts to stop suspect

One man is behind bars after threatening to kill an elderly couple, stealing two vehicles, and sparking a high speed police chase. Before authorities teamed up to catch the suspect in D’Iberville, an unsung hero risked his life to help.
Delivery driver Shannon Burton tells News 25 he’s not a hero, but when a man running from police hijacked his truck, he risked his life to stop the man. “I was trying to drag him out of the truck. I was punching him, trying to pull him out the truck.”
Thirty-eight year-old Lowrey Webster from Slidell, Louisiana is in custody after a high speed police chase through Biloxi and D’Iberville that ended on foot. Burton was making a delivery at the IP Casino in Biloxi on Tuesday morning when he says Webster snuck up behind him. “I thought it was kind of strange. When I turned around, he jumps into the driver’s seat of the truck.”
Burton tells News 25 he leaped into his truck to stop the man before Webster got away. “All I thought was if he gets away with this truck, it’s a big weapon. I was worried he was going to run into somebody, hit somebody, because he looked like he really, really wanted to do something bad.”
After jumping out of the truck, Webster then allegedly threatened to kill an elderly couple, stole their car and then headed towards D’Iberville. Lt. Jim Adamo with Biloxi PD said, “Driving extremely dangerously, went on one of the side streets, where the individual decided to bail out of the vehicle.”
Officers deployed a spike strip on I-110 as the suspect fled from authorities. After ditching the stolen vehicle north of the interstate near Lamey Bridge Road in D’Iberville, the chase turned into a foot pursuit. Webster was tracked down on Highland Avenue and placed under arrest. “None of our citizens were injured. None of our officers were injured and we got a bad guy off the streets.”
Webster is charged with two counts of carjacking and one count of felony eluding. His bond was set at $250,000. “He’s right where he belongs. He needs to stay behind bars for a long time. He deserves to be where he’s at.,” said Burton.
