Former Southern Miss baseball standout riding out Irma in Florida

When it comes to natural disasters as big as Hurricane Irma, most everyone has some kind of personal connection to the affected regions. For the Southern Miss sports family, one of those connections is Tim Lynch.
The former first baseman for the Golden Eagles just wrapped up his second season in the minor leagues yesterday with the advanced A Tampa Yankees. Today he was back in his hometown of Jupiter, Florida with his family boarding up their house.
Right now, Palm Beach County is under a hurricane watch as one of the northernmost communities in the Miami metropolitan area.
Lynch says there is a chance to ride it out in the same house where he first learned how to play catch, fully aware of the monster in the Atlantic. “Some of this magnitude or what they’re saying of this magnitude, I guess no one has ever seen. So I don’t really know how to answer that question just because it’s something you try your best to prepare for, but when it comes it’s coming. So definitely seeing some of the videos and stuff is pretty scary and seeing what a hurricane of this magnitude is capable of doing is pretty scary, but we’re hoping for the best.”
In 57 games with the Tampa Yankees this season, Lynch rediscovered his power stroke to the tune of 13 home runs to go along with 40 RBIs and a .310 batting average.
He was a four year starter at USM and a ninth round selection by the New York Yankees in 2016.
