Jackson County Blue Ribbon Fair celebrates local senior citizens

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- The Jackson County Blue Ribbon Fair celebrated local seniors with Old Settlers Day, featuring special activities and entertainment for residents ages 70 and older.

Hundreds of seniors filled the civic center for the special celebration. Attendees received free meal vouchers to be used at any of the fair’s food trucks.

Students from Jackson County high schools and colleges volunteered their time to help seniors get around the fairgrounds.

The celebration featured the Dudeck Trio gospel singers, Quiet Storm dancers, and a special appearance by an Elvis impersonator. Fair Association President Dawn Jones said, “A lot of people seem to forget about senior citizens, they’re usually like oh yeah grandma and grandpa is in the nursing home and they don’t get out much. So, we want to celebrate them and we get a lot of ‘thanks’ just for recognizing them. The smile on the senior citizen faces when they see these young people giving them a hand and helping them. Young people need to do it because they need someone to look up to and say I want to be like that when I get older.”

The fair continues through Sunday with rides, food, and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
