Pearl River Football Coach Seth Smith Resigns After Seven Seasons
POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River Community College announced Monday that head football coach Seth Smith has resigned after seven seasons leading the Wildcats.
“Coach Smith and his family embody so much of what makes Pearl River Community College special,” Pearl River President Dr. Adam Breerwood said. “As lifelong Wildcats, their character, integrity and values have earned the respect and admiration of our entire campus community.
“We are profoundly grateful for Coach Smith‘s leadership and for the passion, care and unwavering commitment he brought to our student-athletes and PRCC. His impact reaches beyond his role; through his example and dedication, he strengthened the Wildcat family and helped make PRCC a better place. We will always appreciate the time, energy and heart he invested in our college and our football program.
“The friendships he and his family have built here will last a lifetime, and they will always be cherished members of the Wildcat family. As they begin this next chapter, we fully support their decision. I know Coach Smith is ready for the next challenge and look forward to his success. Seth and his family will always have our love, gratitude and unwavering support.”
“Seth Smith means a great deal to me personally and to Pearl River Community College,” Pearl River Athletics Director Michael Avalon said. “As a former Wildcat player, Seth has always had a genuine love for this place and the people who make it special. I appreciate his dedication to Pearl River, our student-athletes and our football program.
“Coaching comes with tremendous challenges, expectations and pressures, but at the end of the day, the relationships we build and the people we impact matter most. Seth is a good man who is grounded in his faith, loves his family and cares deeply about his players. He will always be a Wildcat. I have a great deal of respect for Seth and am grateful for the friendship we share. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in the next chapter.”
A Wildcat alum, Smith returned home to lead the program ahead of the 2020 season. A native of Millard, Miss., he signed with Pearl River in 1999 after starring at Pearl River Central High School, and he later served as Pearl River Central’s defensive coordinator from 2009-12 before building a perennial contender at East Central High School.
Under Smith, the Wildcats fielded the top rushing attack in the MACCC in both 2020 and 2021, finishing 2-4 and 2-7, respectively. In 2022, Pearl River went 6-3, its first six-win season since 2010, and beat rival Gulf Coast in the 100th all-time meeting. The Wildcat defense ranked first in the MACCC and sixth nationally in points allowed per game, and Smith was named the South Division Coach of the Year. The 2023 Wildcats finished the year 1-8.
In 2024, Smith guided the Wildcats to a 4-5 record that included a win over No. 7 Northwest and a victory over East Mississippi, Pearl River’s first against the Lions since 2008. The 2025 Wildcats averaged 335 yards and 22.6 points per game, wrapping up the year 1-8. Pearl River sits at 3-5 with two games left to play in the 2026 season. The Wildcats are 19-40 in Smith‘s seven years at the helm of the program.
The search for PRCC’s next head coach is already underway.
