Hundreds turn out for Mississippi Power Household Hazardous Waste Collection in Harrison County
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Mississippi Power had a major turnout for its annual household hazardous waste collection event over the weekend.
Nearly 600 vehicles came through the line to safely dispose of unwanted household items.
Overall, they collected 900 gallons of oil, 116 tons of old tires, and large amounts of electronic waste and appliances.
Items accepted included batteries, chemicals, televisions, computers, and small air conditioning units.
Mississippi Power employees joined Harrison County and community partners to help collect and safely dispose of the materials. Mississippi Power Spokesperson Kaila Moran Griffith said, “And so, this event really is just a very important piece of our environmental stewardship program. And we are so happy to be able to offer it every year for our residents. Absolutely. So, like I said, this is one of our environmental stewardship programs. Our volunteers are very passionate about making sure that our where we live, work and play stays clean and safe for our residents. You know, we have ‘Renew our Rivers’ every year. That’s where we go into our waterways and remove debris. This is step one of that. So, making sure that that debris does not even end up anywhere near our waterways. And so, this is just one piece of that puzzle. We have roughly 50 Mississippi Power and volunteers out this morning along with some of our community partners and so we are just very passionate to be able to offer this event for Harrison County residents.”
