Picayune Pulls Away From Hancock for 56-27 Regional Win

The Hancock Hawks hosted the Picayune Maroon Tide for the Class 6A Region 4 showdown.

The Maroon Tide held a 21-7 lead late in the second quarter when the Hawks looked to make a push before halftime.

Hancock quarterback Justin Wedgeworth, the Coast’s leading passer, connected with Talley for a first down, taking advantage of open space in front of him. However, the Picayune defense answered on the next drive, as senior Ahmart-A Raymond brought Wedgeworth down for a quarterback sack.

With just seconds remaining in the first half, Picayune had one more big play in store.

Senior quarterback Gabe Brewer faked a handoff before delivering a jump pass to senior running back Xavier Dennis near the sideline. Dennis found room to run and raced all the way into the end zone, extending the Maroon Tide’s lead to 34-7.

Picayune carried that momentum into the second half, eventually pulling away for the 56-27 win over the Hawks.

Despite the loss, Hancock had a special moment at halftime. Cheer coach Faith Rutledge received a national coaching award, earning recognition for her accomplishments.

Congratulations to Coach Faith Rutledge on the national honor!
