High School marching bands participate in 58th annual State Marching Evaluation

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- High school marching bands from across the region brought the music and school pride to Gulfport’s Milner Stadum for the state marching evaluation.

WXXV News 25’s Asia Ellis show us how these students turned months of practice into a performance to remember.

When the beat drops, the band steals the show and these students have put in the hard work to deliver a performance worth remembering.

Over 30 high school bands from across the region took over Gulfport’s Milner Stadium for the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s 58th Region 5 State Marching Evaluation, showcasing their musical talent, precision, and teamwork through every performance. Loyd Star Drum Major Pierson Jordan said, “We just work so hard! We had a few problems when we first started, but our directors helped us get where we need to be. We started at 30 players and we’ve almost doubled because we’re at 60 now. I’m just really happy we’ve made it this far and we get to perform.”

Behind every clean formation and perfect beat are hours of practice, with band directors guiding their students every step of the way to bring each performance to life. Loyd Star Band Director Sharon Laird said, “Band teaches you to be on time and work well with others, to have high character and have high standards. So, I want them to carry not only the musical knowledge but all the things that help make us wonderful human beings.”

With each band bringing its own style and sound to the field, the evaluation gave students a chance to gain experience, build confidence, and take pride in their work as musicians.
