Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner pushes back over proposed water rules

Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson is pushing back against proposed new state water regulations.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is considering rules that would expand oversight of certain waterways, including temporary streams and ditches.

Gipson submitted his formal opposition to MDEQ last week ahead of the public comment deadline.

Gipson argues the proposal would place unnecessary restrictions on landowners, farmers, and developers.

He says Mississippi should focus on reducing regulations to remain competitive with neighboring states.
