Long Beach High School is in the running for T-Mobile’s Friday Night Lights 5G Competition

LONG BEACH, Miss. (WXXV)- Long Beach High School is playing for more than a win on the field. The Bearcats are in the running for a million-dollar stadium makeover and now they need Bearcat Nation to show up!

The Bearcats have been calling their field home for about 50 years and now, with your help, they’re hoping to score a major makeover.

Long Beach High School has already earned $25,000 as one of 40 national finalists in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Competition. Now, they’re chasing the million-dollar grand prize and the chance to give this stadium some major upgrades. Long Beach Athletic Director Bob Reeves said, “Anything you use overtime it obviously wears down, so a stadium like we have is not only used by our football program. It’s also our soccer field and we host track meets. It’s not just high school; it’s middle school also. So, when you take all of those events over a number of years, not just the field or the track but the number of fans that have come through over those decades you just see things wear out over time. So, it’s not that anything has been neglected or forgotten. It’s just that over these years things have torn up.”

New seating, updated locker rooms and restrooms, and better accessibility are some of the improvements the grand prize could help fund. To bring that money home, Long Beach needs votes. “Participating in something like this is exciting and the coolest thing I’ve seen this week is the buy in from the community. I think it would mean a lot for these young people to have not just something nice now, but also have a nice place to come back to and bring their families.”

Voting is open daily through October 25th. The grand prize winner will be announced November 12. To vote for Long Beach, click here!
